Format hard drive and install window XP?

Posted in: enart.nnmj.com Date: March 11th, 2010

  • I got a problem with my computer so thought to remove all the file and install XP again. I insert the cd before the windows starts. I followed up the instruction and the installation was completed successfully. But the used space in the hard drive is still 40 GB which was almost same before i install it. I went through the hard drive if i can access the old files but i cant. Somebody please help me to empty my hard drive..

  • format the hard drive. sometimes you gotta make a boot disk. otherwise it's nearly impossible if you have a proprietary machine

    FDISK will clean the plate

  • you need to delete the partition and create a new one before you load windows.

it will give you a warning saying "if you delete then everything on your computer will be lost"

so save whatever you want to keep

    Then format.

Start over and see how it goes.

email me if you have any more trouble.

  • i'm not precisely sure but i think your choosing a wrong option in the setup

  • Hmm--- I've installed XP over 200 times (IT Guy) and haven't seen that----but it sounds like you did not delete an old partition. When you were promted about the format at the beginning of the install, did you see 2 partitions? (for example, a "C" and a "D"). You can check this by right clicking My Computer, select "Manage" and drive management. If there is unpartitioned space there, you can format the remaining space as a second partition (rather than reinstalling). If that doesn't reveal anything, and you can't access the files, it sounds like you need to reinstall and be sure to format the entire drive.

  • dunno

  • Do a fresh install. Insert the cd into the Drive and restart the computer. Then hit any button when asked to boot to the cd. You want to make sure that you delete the old partitions if you want everything erased. Then create a new partition using the whole drive size which for 40 gb would look something like 40000 mb. Then run the format but do not do quick format as this will only delete the registry I think. And follow instructions to install.

  • I started typing this but... this is easier...check the source.

  • Do you even know if your hard drive has a restore partition?

  • Insert CD
    turn comp off--turn on
    press f12
    boot from cd
    click on the drive/advanced options
it should opt you to format the drive or remove previous windows, which is pretty much same thing.

  • *chuckles mysteriously* ooooo, just put a big magnet up to the hard drive for a few seconds and EVERYTHING will be wiped clean *hehehehe*
