It suppose to be an update for windows vista ultimate, can you tell me what does it do, as much information as you can. appreciate your help.

  • It aint an update for vista, its been there for a few years now. It simply allows you to scan your pc for infections. It however is not complete protection. It scans for some more commonly known viruses.

  • its like a built in ad-aware and spydoctor. i have found that it isnt very effective. i would still run ad-aware instead. all of these programs remove the files and registry changes that can occur do to malicious files on the net.

  • Once a month Microsoft releases a new update to the "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool" (I believe every first or second Thursday or Tuesday of the month the new updates are released).

    **
The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool checks computers running Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 for infections by specific, prevalent malicious softwareâ ”including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoomâ ”and helps remove any infection found. When the detection and removal process is complete, the tool displays a report describing the outcome, including which, if any, malicious software was detected and removed.

Basically it is a small quick scanner which scans for a few of the critical viruses that could be on your computer. It is NOT to replace your security software however. It is a once a month checkup.

    More info in the source.

  • Detects and is "supposed" to remove malware or spyware.

  • It is a tool Microsoft first put out a few years ago. It is updated on a monthly basis and will show up with any other security patches Microsoft issues on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. All you need to do is download it, it will quickly check your computer for some malware and eliminate it.

The MSRT is not intended to be a replacement for your regular security products which you still need (eg: firewall, antivirus and antispyware). The tool can also be run manually by downloading it directly from Microsoft.

You can read more about it at the Microsoft webpage below.
