Zone 10 flower question?

Posted in: enart.nnmj.com Date: March 14th, 2010

  • I recently moved to South Florida, Zone 10. I am interested in planting some flowers in a flower box that is almost always in the shade. I was wondering about light leaf begonias, I had them planted in the shade in Zone 7 and they thrived until the first frost. Would they be a good option here? If not some other colorful suggestions please?

  • Coleus would be good. You can't get much more colorful plants, and they'll handle both sun and shade. Another plant would be crotons, they're very brightly colored, with leathery leaves. Crotons can tolerate morning sun quite well.

Until you're comfortable with growing in Zone 10, stick with tried and true varieties that you see growing in your city.

  • I'm in south Texas. Does that make us neighbors---at least horticulturally?
I can grow begonias (both light and dark leaf) all
year long in part or all shade. They do become straggly after months so I replace them-bloom constantly.
Coleus, caladiums, crotons, impatiens (also a good choice),and all tropicals are easy. We rarely have freezes.
However, it did snow on 2004. about 2 inches, first time in over 100 yrs. Can grow ferns-Boston and river (broad leaf), good for you flower box w/impatiens or begonias in front. My favorite color would be red. I don't have much luck with petunias but grow many hibiscus. Get back to me if you have any questions; I'll look for you in this section under the same title..
